The Latest On Muhammad al-Shareef's Father

Jazakum Allahu Khayr

Alhamdulillah, earlier today Tuesday Feb.24th, my father Helmy Elsherief was released by the Egyptian authorities. It was announced across the national Canadian news. My mother and sister talked to him, he is doing alright. He was crying on the phone when he spoke to my mother and sister. For the next week, he will be visiting with his family in Egypt, awaiting the return of his passport, and in sha Allah we expect him back in Canada next week.

May Allah reward ALL who assisted in securing his release. Indeed, after Allah’s assistance, if it was not for the unified effort of all of you, Allah only knows how much longer he would have stayed.

Rest assured, I have not forgotten about the hundreds of others like my father that have no one to speak up for them and no news media to speak highly of them. Indeed, I feel Allah is calling me to bring up their case and not remain silent just because ‘my’ father is alright. What about the other sons and daughters that are without their detained fathers?

In sha Allah, when my father returns and we have the press conference, we shall awaken Qabeelat Nasr once again with a few more tasks. Until then, in sha Allah.

Again, may Allah ta’ala accept from all of you that made dua and assisted with whatever you could.

Your brother,
Muhammad Alshareef

Detain Injustice, Not Our Fathers, Part 2

Salat Al-Jumu’ah at the Egyptian Embassy this Friday Feb 27!
Synopsis: Allah willing, sermon and prayer to be performed by Muhammad Alshareef. Muhammad Alshareef (www.AlMaghrib.org) is the son of the 63-year old Canadian Helmy Elsherief who is currently being held by Egyptian authorities, denied access to a lawyer and denied permission to contact his family.

What happened?
From Muhammad Alshareef: Dear brothers and sisters. After Hajj this year my father wished to travel back to Egypt to visit his family. In the Egyptian airport he was detained for hours, which turned into days, which turned into weeks. It’s been 20 days now.

He was denied a lawyer. He was denied access to the Canadian consulate in Egypt. He was denied permission to contact my mother – my mother who has been crying for the last 20 days. What crime did he commit? For the sake of Allah, he is 63 years old. His grandchildren are asking where is Jaddo (grandfather)? I came home yesterday and watched in tears as my mother cried on national television, ‘it’s not fair!’

Detain Injustice, Not my Father!
Friday Feb 27th, this coming Friday, in sha Allah, I shall be traveling from the USA to Ottawa, Canada to give perhaps one of the most passionate Khutbahs of my life. I chose that the location of the Khutbah would be outside of the Egyptian Embassy so that those inside could have a better chance of hearing what Muslims in Canada have to say. Ummat Muhammad stands united!

Address:
The Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt
454 Laurier Avenue East
Ottawa, Ontario
Canada K1N 6R3

(The Jumu’ah service will be conducted in a park about 200 meters from the Embassy. There will be signs and volunteers directing the
Musalleen.)

The media shall be invited. MP Dan McTeague, who is responsible for all Muslim detainees overseas, shall be invited. And the Egyptian ambassador to Canada Dr.Shakir shall be invited.

In the name of Allah, I ask you belittle the cold and attend this Khutbah. In the name of Allah, I ask you to stand up for the rights of your Muslim brother and father. In the name of Allah, I pray to Allah that you will be amongst those who stood up and attended when they were called to stand up.

ACTION REQUESTED: Confirm Your Attendance
We MUST have at least 500 brothers and sisters confirm to attend this Jumu’ah service.

‘How do I confirm?’
Email: ali@bokhari.ca with a subject line ‘I stand confirmed’

Ali Bokhari, the brother-in-law of Muhammad Alshareef, will be coordinating the Jumu’ah Salah.

Ali@Bokhari.ca
613.864.9422

We will NOT stop our campaign for this Jumu’ah Service until 500 Muslims have confirmed to attend. Allah willing, it will be one of the most powerful Khutbahs you have attended in a long time.

Email now and CONFIRM that you will attend! Email now and CONFIRM that you will attend!

May Allah protect all our brothers and sisters, the world over, who have no one to stand up on their behalf. We have not forgotten you. Bi idhnillah, this campaign will set a precedent to protect the rights of Muslims the world over.

Let injustice be the one that is detained, not our fathers!

"What if I live outside of Canada?"
If you live outside of Canada, you can still assist in this effort by joining a taskforce setup by Muhammad Alshareef. It's called, Qabeelat Nasr (the tribe of victory).

In this taskforce tribe, we will be sending out action items that MUST be performed. Things like emailing thank-yous to favorable articles and letters/phone calls of dissapointment to unfavorable articles.

To join, email Muhammad@alhuda.org with your contact info. Email
Subject: Qabeelat Nasr

If you've already joined Qabeelat Nasr, please tell everyone you know - from Malaysia to South Africa to South America - tell them about this upcoming Khutbah so that they may know that the Muslims in Canada are standing up to the injustice.

Detain Injustice, Not Our Fathers

The Background
URGENT: My DAD was DETAINED!
From: Muhammad Alshareef
------------------------- -------------------------

As salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah,

Everything is in the hands of Allah and I ask Allah to ease the pain. We ask Allah ta'ala for 'Aafiyah.

My father, upon returning from Hajj, wished to see his family in Egypt. Last year, after 15 years away from his family, he visited Egypt and loved it so much he wanted to leave Canada and move back to Egypt for good. This year after Hajj, he returned again to Egypt only to find a different situation.

They detained him in the airport for hours, then days, and now 2 weeks have gone by. He was never allowed contact with his family, he was denied a lawyer, he was not charged for anything – and the mockery of justice continues till this moment. They could never do this to anyone else UNLESS they were Muslim.

My sister and I decided to wait, at the advice from CAIR Canada, until Amnesty International (a large civil rights group) united in the condemnation of the Egyptian and Canadian authorities (for not protecting my father who is a Canadian citizen). Amnesty has drafted the letter and all this is about to go national within a day or so.

A few years ago, before all of the craziness in the world happened, my father worked in Pakistan with Afghani orphans. Remember when the media speaks about a time when Afghanistan was forgotten. Well, my father and my mother were there feeding those kids. And it is because of that they have decided to harm my father half a decade later. My father is about to turn 64!

I ask you for dua. This time it is personal.

200 strong taskforce tribe [Qabeelat Nasr] – nothing less
In contemplating what has happened to my father, I believe that Allah ta’ala wants me to defend my father in a way that would assist other Muslims in the same plight who do not have the resources that I have. In the coming days, I will be performing the Khutbah outside the Egyptian embassy in Ottawa, doing media interviews, and launching a website. In sha Allah, we will do what no other organization has done before – for the sake of all our Muslim brothers and fathers who have done no crime other then profess that there is no god but Allah.

I am going to compile a group of 200 workers. These workers will be under my command, if we need to phone an embassy, ALL 200 MUST phone the embassy within 24 hours. If someone writes a bad article about my dad, ALL 200 MUST complain to the newspaper within 24 hours. All 200 will have to report back to their Ameer/Ameerah via email that they completed the task. This is no joke, any of the 200 who does not fulfill the task will be asked to go home.

(Don’t worry, I won’t ask anyone to do anything crazy. We will be doing, basically, what CAIR does, but in an organized and disciplined fashion under my leadership. And I will do Shoora with the members before making a command).

After asking for the Power of Allah in easing this affair, I am calling on the power of all the AlMaghrib students. This one’s personal.

Detain Injustice, Not Our Fathers

JOIN THE 200 STRONG [I call it Qabeelat (the tribe of) Nasr (victory)]
You are welcome to join this taskforce tribe from other countries outside of the USA and Canada, but you MUST fulfill the time deadlines of contacting this embassy or that one. And you must have discipline equal to how somoene follows the Imam in prayer. When the Imam says Allahu Akbar and prostrates, you say Allahu Akbar and prostate immediately after that.

We will have sub-Ameers and Ameerahs to contact you and explain to you how our phone tree will work and prep you on what we will be doing.

If you would like to join the 200 Strong Tribe, email me at Muhammad@alhuda.org with your name, email, phone number and alternate phone number and where you are located.

I pray to Allah to include you amongst those who stood up when they were asked to stand up.

.: Who Do You Love? :.
02.19.04 (5:01 am)

Love

Allah says,
"Say: 'If your fathers or your sons or your brothers
or your wives or your tribe,
or any wealth you have acquired,
or any business you fear may slump,
or any dwelling-places which please you,
are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger
and fighting hard in jihad in His Way,
then wait until Allah brings about His command.'"
(at-Tawba 9:25)

One of the Salaf, Sufyan at-Thawri was on his death bed and he began to cry. They said: "Why are you crying? Allah has written death to all people." He said: "I am not crying because of death but I am crying because Tawheed will be taken away from me." And what he meant by Tawheed is the love of worship for Allaah subhanahu wa ta`ala only.

When the Makkans drove Zayd ibn ad-Dathima out of the Haram to kill him, Abu Sufyan ibn Harb said to him, "I ask you by Allah, Zayd, don't you wish that Muhammad were with us now to take your place so that we could cut off his head, and you were with your family?" Zayd said, "By Allah, I would not wish Muhammad to be now in a place where even a thorn could hurt him if that was the condition for my being with my family!" Abu Sufyan remarked, "I have not seen any people who love anyone the way the Companions of Muhammad love Muhammad."

Anas radhiallahu `anhu reported that the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said, "There are three things which cause anyone who takes refuge in them to experience the sweetness of iman - that Allah and His Messenger are more beloved to him than anything else; that he loves a man only for Allah; and that he dislikes the thought of reverting to disbelief as much as he would dislike being cast into the Fire." (al-Bukhari & Muslim)

`Umar ibn al-Khattab radhiallahu `anhu told the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, "I love you more than anything except my soul which is between my two sides." The Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam replied, "None of you will believe until I am dearer to him than his own soul." 'Umar said, "By the One who sent down the Book on you, I love you more than my soul which is between my two sides." The Prophet said, "'Umar, now you have it!" (al-Bukhari)

Anas said that a man came to the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam and asked, "When will the Last Hour come, Messenger of Allah?" , "What have you prepared for it?" he asked? He replied, "I have not prepared a lot of prayer or fasting or charity for it, but I love Allah and His Messenger." The Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said, "You will be with the one you love." (al-Bukhari)

'Ali said that the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam took Hasan and Husayn radhiallahu `anhuma by the hand and said, "Whoever loves me and loves these two and their father and mother will have the same degree as me on the Day of Rising." (at-Tirmidhi)

It is related that a man came to the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam and said, "Messenger of Allah, I love you more than my family and my possessions. I remember you and I cannot wait until I can come and look at you. I remember that I will die and you will die and I know that when you enter the Garden, you will be raised up with the Prophets. When I enter it, I will not see you." Allah then revealed, "Whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger, will be with those whom Allah has blessed: the Prophets, the men of truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And such people are the best of company!" (an-Nisaa 4:68) The Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam called the man and recited the verses to him. (at-Tabarani)

Abu Hurayra radhiallahu `anhu said that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said, "Those in my community with the strongest love for me are the people who will come after me. Some of them would give their family and wealth to have seen me." (Muslim and al-Bukhari)

Among the delights of Paradise:

"Bricks of gold and silver, and mortar of fragrant musk,

Whoever enters it is filled with joy and will never feel miserable;

Regret is an awful thing to endure...

A tempest blew up in our little blogging community the last couple of days - the less said about it, the better.

I'd just like to apologise sincerely for commenting at all on the topic in Sister Lyna's blog - as someone uninvolved in the situation, it was irresponsible of me to have posted a comment there.

Ali radhiallahu `anhu related that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said, "It is part of a man's sound practice of Islam that he leave alone that which is of no concern to him." [At-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah]

I had not intended harm but I regret not exercising discretion for I know that I may have inadvertently added fuel to the fire.

Ibn ‘Abbaas, radhiallahu `anhuma, said: “Achieving the following five matters is more beneficial than owning the best types of horses:

1. Not involving yourselves in conversations that do not concern you, as there is no guarantee that you would not sin therein.

2. Not talking about things that do concern you, until you find the proper time; as a person may talk about a matter that does concern them but at the wrong time and therefore produce a bad consequence.

3. Not arguing with a wise or a foolish person, as the wise person would desert you and the foolish person would humiliate you.

4. Mentioning your brother, in his absence, with things with which you would wish him to mention you with in your absence - and forgiving him for that which you would wish him to forgive you for.

5. Performing the actions of one who is certain that he would be rewarded for the good and punished for the bad that he does.”

The Messenger of Allah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam had advised Abu Dharr, radhiallahu `anhu, saying: “Stay silent for long periods, as this keeps Satan away from you and helps you in the practice of your religion.”

He sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam also said: “No servants of Allah’s belief will be correct until his heart is corrected, and his heart will never be corrected until his tongue is.”

May Allah forgive us all and may He unite us ameen.

The Ominous Words of Saladin about Our Ummah

I was looking through my collection of inspiring and beneficial emails when I came across this one prepared by Brother Shibli Zaman.

I hope you will gain some benefit from this inshaa Allah ...

"After I die, you will see these Muslims fall apart in disunity, and you will see the Europeans grow strong. The best thing to do for now is to continue the fight until we drive them from the Coast (of Palestine) or die."

This is a statement of Salah ad-Deen Abu-l AfDal Yusuf ibn al-Ayyub, popularly known as "Saladin" in the West, as recorded by his personal companion and scribe, Ibn Shaddaad (page 203 of his chronicles).

Saladin stated this after King Richard of England proposed that Saladin's brother, Sayf ad-Deen (popularly known as "Safadin" in the West), should marry his sister Joanna. So admirable was Saladin's character that his worst enemy who had traveled over 2000 miles to eliminate him, ended up offering his own sister to his family. This is the result of Perfect Islamic "Ikhlaaq" and "Aadab".

Also, Saladin stated in regards to the troubles he endured uniting the entire Muslim world under one banner: "I do not know what will happen to me, if Allah wills that the enemy should grow strong. They have established a base from which they can retrieve other lands. you will see these Muslim leaders sitting at the tops of their grandiose towers saying, 'I shall not come down,' until the Muslim world will be destroyed."

How did Saladin destroy his enemies, drive the Franks from Jerusalem and most of Palestine, and be written of so well by the European historians whose people he defeated? This is how:

"On July 3 Salah ad-Deen performed the Friday prayer in the Mosque of al-Aqsa, I saw him prostrating and repeating his prayers over and over again as his tears soaked the prayer mat."

The Death of Saladin
On February 20, 1193, Saladin rode out to meet the Pilgrims returning from the Hajj in Mecca. He had longed to perform the Hajj his entire life, but the constant Jihad did not allow such. That night he fell ill and broke out into a tempestuous fever.

On the fourth day of his illness they had him bled, which was a tradition of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Saladin would not stop sweating.

On the ninth day of his illness he stopped taking liquids.

By March 3 on the eleventh day of his illness, Saladin had sweat so much that the bed was soaked and the floor stained. The scholars who witnessed this testified to it being a match to the description of a good death in the Sunnah.

On the morning of March 4, 1193, the Imam Abu Ja`far was reciting from the Qur'an as Saladin's son al-AfDal, and his friend and administrator al-FaDil, as well as others looked on. As the Imam reached following verse of Surat at-Tawbah, the Qur'anic chapter most associated with Jihad:

"...Hasbuna-llaahu laa ilaha illa huwa; `alayhi tawakalt; wa huwa Rabbu-l `arshi-l `aTHeem."

["...Allah sufficeth me; There is no god but He; On Him is my trust; He is the Lord of the Throne Supreme!"]

Saladin smiled from ear to ear, and breathed his last.

7 Habits of the Highly Successful People

Received this profound reminder via email today...

Successful indeed are the believers.
[Al-Mu'minun 23:1]

1: Those who offer their Salât (prayers)
with all solemnity and full submissiveness.
[Al-Mu'minun 23:2]

2: And those who turn away from Al-Laghw
(dirty, false, evil vain talk, falsehood,
and all that Allâh has forbidden).
[Al-Mu'minun 23:3]

3: And those who pay the Zakât.
[Al-Mu'minun 23:4]

4: And those who guard their chastity
(i.e. private parts, from illegal sexual acts)
[Al-Mu'minun 23:5]

Except from their wives or (the captives and slaves)
that their right hands possess,
for then, they are free from blame;
[Al-Mu'minun 23:6]

But whoever seeks beyond that,
then those are the transgressors;
[Al-Mu'minun 23:7]

5-6: Those who are faithfully true to their Amanât
(all the duties which Allâh has ordained,
honesty, moral responsibility and trusts etc.)
and to their covenants;
[Al-Mu'minun 23:8]

7: And those who strictly guard their
(five compulsory congregational) Salawât (prayers)
(at their fixed stated hours).
[Al-Mu'minun 23:9]

These are indeed the inheritors.
[Al-Mu'minun 23:10]

Who shall inherit the Firdaus (Paradise).
They shall dwell therein forever.
[Al-Mu'minun 23:11]

The One Who will judge between His Servants through His laws of the Sharee`ah, His laws of Decree and His laws and recompense. The One who opens the eyes of those who are truthful and sincere by His Kindness. The One who opens their hearts so that they can know Him, love Him and repent to Him. He opens the doors of mercy and sustenance for His servants and provides them the means of attaining both the good in this life and the Hereafter,

"Whatever mercy Allah may grant to mankind, none can withhold it and none can grant it thereafter." (35:2)

"Say: Our Lord will assemble us all together (on the Day of Resurrection), then He will judge between them. He is the Judge, the All-Knowing." (34:26)

"He said: My Lord! Verily, my people have belied me. Therefore judge You between me and them, and save me and the believers who are with me." (26:117-118)

The above is a lovely painting by a very talented brother, Hafez SH, who has his own web-site at ArtHafez.Com. He has a breathtaking collection of original oil paintings of the 99 Names of Allah, flowers and my favourite season, autumn!

.: Heaven :.

Heaven

It was the eve of `Eid and the flat was still messy and dusty. I had just half an hour before Maryam's bed time and I knew that I would nod off with her so I was desperate to make sure that the apartment was halfway decent before that. Inwardly reproaching myself for having left things at the last minute, I wiped, swept and mopped feverishly.

My two-year-old followed me around, rag and sponge in hand trying to be of some help. Our last stop was the kitchen. She likes it there and now that she is over the "Ummi, what is this?" phase, she often launches into the "Who bought this, Ummi?" mode. This time, though, the chat turned out to be a little different.

"Ummi, who bought this bin?" Maryam asked pointing to the white trash can next to the sink.

I turned briefly and told her, "Your Baba did... He bought it at Walmart in Wisconsin." I smiled briefly, remembering that Maryam was born there. But there really was no time for walking down memory lane... I continued scouring the sink like there was no tomorrow.

"Ummi, who bought those bottles?" she piped up again, pointing at her milk bottles.

"I did... I bought them for you at Kiddy Palace, remember?" I said, thinking that I really was not in the mood for this conversation.

"Ummi, who bought that oven?" she said pointing to the large oven in the corner.

"Hmm… I don't know Maryam. That belongs to the flat owner. We are just renting here, you know." I really had too much to do.

"Ummi, who bought that small oven?" she asked unrelentingly, pointing to the small grill oven my mother had bought.

"Jiddah bought it for us… that big oven does not work..."

"Ummi…" I bit my tongue and stopped myself from telling her to hush. "Ummi, who bought that microwave oven?"

I stopped wiping and any annoyance I felt at her incessant questions faded away right then and there. My father had bought us the microwave oven when we set up house here in Singapore. It was going to be my second `Eid without him – he had died a couple of weeks short of the previous `Eid.

"Jid bought it, Maryam." Strangely enough, the little livewire fell silent too.

When she did speak, she said earnestly, "I love Jid, Ummi."

"I love him too."

"I want to hug Jid."

"Well, make du`aa OK… inshaa Allah we can all see and hug Jid in Jannah."

"Ummi?"

"Yes, Maryam?"

"Where is Jannah?"

I dropped the rag and picked her up… What's a bit of dust, really?

.: Yaa `Aabid al-Haramayn :.
11.17.03 (9:33 pm)

Yaa `Abid al-Haramayn
Click here to listen to this nasheed by Tariq Abu Zayed

The following is Brother Shibli Zaman's write-up on this beautiful Nasheed from one of the greatest of the Salafus-SaaliH:

"Yaa `aabid al-haramayni, law abSartanaa; la`llimta annaka bi-l `ibaadati tal`abu; Man yakhdubu khaddahu bi dumu'ihi; Fa nuhuruna bi l-dima'i tatakhaddabu ..."

This Nasheed is mentioned in Imaam ath-Thahabi's "Siyar al-A`laam al-Nubalaa'":

"Narrated by al-KhaaTib ibn `Asaakir, on the authority of Muhammad bin Ibraaheem bin Abee Sakeenah who said: 'Abdullaah ibn al-Mubaarak recited these couplets to us in Tarsus and recited them to FuDayl bin `EeyaaD.' This was in the year 170 (Hijri)."

Tarsus is "Tarsoos" in Arabic. Back then it was Byzantine Anatolia, or Greece, which the Muslims called "ar-Room". Today it is in modern day Turkey.

This is also found in Tafseer ibn Katheer at the end of the interpretation of Surah Aal `Imraan from ibn `Asaakir instead of Abdullaah bin Muhammad QaaDee.[*]

`Abdullaah ibn al-Mubaarak (raHimahumullaah) was a Tabi`ee originally from what was called Khorasan in the time of the Prophet (Sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam). Today it includes parts of Iran and Afghanistan. He was of mixed Turkic and Persian background. He was considered the greatest of the Taabi`een in his time and Imaam ath-Thahabi as well as Imaam ibn Hajar have called him "The Master of the Scholars and Imaams of his time". He was, like all the great examples of the Salaf and those on their creed such as ibn Taymiyyah, a "Warrior Scholar". A man of knowledge who never ceased from the battlefield and traveled all over the world for the sake of Allaah.

In Imam ath-Thahabi's Siyar al-A`laam an-Nubalaa' it is said about Abdullaah ibn al-Mubaarak: "FuDayl, Sufyaan and the Mashaykh were sitting in the Masjid al-Haraam then approached ibn al-Mubaarak. Upon that Sufyaan said, 'There is a man (of knowledge) from the People of the East'. To that FuDayl replied, 'There is a man from the People of the East, and the West, and everything in between!'"

When he died, Haroon ar-Rasheed the Abbasid Caliph remarked, "The Master of the Scholars has died!" (Siyar al-A`laam)

The Nasheed is also found in the Tareekh Damashq (History of Damascus) of Ibn `Asaakir.

The translation is as follows:

"O you who worships in the Two Holiest of places, If you had seen us you would know that your worship is but mere play (1);
You whose cheeks are tinted with tears, our chests are tinted with our blood!
And if your horse is busy in frivolity, our horses are busy from the morning of the day (2);
The scent of your fragrance to you, and our fragrance to us! (3)
The debris and dust of the hooves of the steed are superior;
Perchance we received this from the sayings of our Prophet;
A speech of rectitude and truth, that can never be perjurous;
There is no equality between the dust of the horse of Allah (4) in the nostrils of a man, and the smoke of a kindling fire;
This is the Book of Allah enunciated between us;
Nay! The martyr is not dead, nor is he false."

[This is an approximate translation and I have attempted to preserve the poetic nature when rendered into English]

(1) Meaning it is but mere play compared to Jihaad for Allaah's sake
(2) Meaning he uses his horse to go from place to place; Whereas, they use their horses fighting in Allah's path from the very morning
(3) Meaning the worshipper may put on fragrance to beautify himself for his worship; Whereas, theirs is the fragrance of the field of jihaad and the fragrance of the martyrs blood which is the scent of musk
(4) "Khayl" muDaaf to the name of Allah is in reference to those horses which are used fighting in the path of Allah

w-Allaahu, `azza sha'nahu wa jall, a`lam..

May Allah forgive me if I have made any errors, and may you all find benefit in this wonderful story. The Prophet (Sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam), his Companions (raDee Allaahu `anhum), and those who devoutly followed them and were called the "Taabi`oon" (meaning "disciples") were generations which hold the answers to all of our problems as a society and the keys to progress as an Ummah. Such inspiring stories are too many to count and of benefit too great to measure.

was-salaamu `alaykum
Abu Abdillaah Shibli Zaman

[*]: From the tafseer of Ibn Katheer:
Al-Hafiz ibn `Asakir mentioned in the biography of `Abdullah bin al-Mubarak, that Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Abi Sakinah said,
"While in the area of Tarsus, `Abdullah bin al-Mubarak dictated this poem to me when I was greeting him goodbye. He sent the poem with me to al-FuDayl bin`Iyad in the year 170, 'O ye who worships in the vicinity of the Two Holy Masjids! If you but see us, you will realise that you are only jesting in worship. He who brings wetness to his cheek with his tears should know that our necks are being wet by our blood. He who tires his horses without purpose, now that our horses are getting tired in battle. Scent of perfume is yours, while ours is the glimmer of spears and the stench of dust [in battle]. We were narrated about in the speech of our Prophet, an authentic statement that never lies. That the dust that erupts by Allah's horses and which fills the nostrils of a man shall never be combined with the smoke of a raging Fire. This, the Book of Allah speaks among us that the martyr is not dead, and the truth in Allah's book cannot be denied.'

"I met al-Fudayl ibn `Iyad in the Sacred Masjid and gave him the leter. When he read it, his eyes became tearful and he said, 'Abu `Abdur-Rahman (`Abdullah bin al-Mubarak) has said the truth and offered sincere advice to me.' He then asked me, 'Do you write the Hadeeth?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Write this Hadeeth as reward for delivering the letter of Abu `Abdur-Rahman to me.' He then dictated,

'Mansur bin al-Mu`tamir narrated to us that Abu Saalih narrated from Abu Hurayrah that a man asked, 'O Messenger of Allah! Teach me a good deed that will earn me the reward of the Mujahideen in Allah's cause.'

The Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said, 'Are you able to pray continuously and fast without breaking the fast?' The man said, 'O Messenger of Allah! I cannot bear it.'

The Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said, 'By He in Whose Hand is my soul! Even if you were able to do it, you would not achieve the grade of the Mujahideen in Allah's cause. Did you not know that the horse of the Mujaahid earns rewards for him as long as it lives?'" [Ahmad]

.: How THEY Spent Their Ramadhaan :.

Ramadan In History
by Dr Abdullah Hakim Quick

All praises to Allah, Lord of the worlds. He who revealed in His Glorious Qur'an, "O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those who came before you that you may keep your duty to your Lord (having taqwa)," (2:185). And may blessings and peace of Allah be upon His last Messenger Muhammad ibn Abdullah, forever.

O you who believe, Ramadan is a sacred month wherein Almighty Allah is constantly testing His creation and giving humanity the opportunity to achieve infinite, endless Bliss. Fasting is a complete purification and a means to developing the consciousness of Allah's presence. The consciousness of Allah (Taqwa) is a protection against the schemes of Shaitan, and the suffering of this world. Allah has informed us that, "Whoever keeps his duty to Allah (has taqwa), He ordains a way out for him and gives him sustenance from where he imagines not. And whoever trusts in Allah, He is sufficient for him. Surely Allah attains His purpose. Allah has appointed a measure for everything." (65:2)

Many Muslims today have a misconception about fasting and the activities of a fasting person. They go into a state of semi-hibernation, spending most of their daylight hours in bed. If they fear Allah, they wake up for prayer, but then return to sleep immediately. This unnatural sleep makes them become lazy, dull-witted and often cranky.

Ramadan is actually a time of increased activity wherein the believer, now lightened of the burdens of constant eating and drinking, should be more willing to strive and struggle for Allah. The Prophet, sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam, passed through approximately nine Ramadans after the Hijrah. They were filled with decisive events and left us a shining example of sacrifice and submission to Allah.

In the first year after the Hijrah, the Prophet, sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam, sent Hamza ibn Abdul Muttalib with thirty Muslim riders to Saif al Bahr to investigate three hundred riders from Quraish who had camped suspiciously in that area. The Muslims were about to engage the disbelievers, but they were separated byMajdy ibn Umar al-Juhany. The Hypocrites of Madinah, hoping to oppose the unity of the Muslims, built their own masjid (called Masjid ad-Dirar). The Prophet, sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam, ordered this masjid to be destroyed in Ramadan.

On the seventeenth of Ramadan, 3 A.H., Almighty Allah separated truth from falsehood at the Great Battle of Badr. The Prophet, sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam, and 313 of his companions set out to intercept a caravan of their own goods that had been left in Makkah. It was led by Abu Sufyan himself, and estimated at 50,000 dinars. They were met, instead, by a well-equipped army of the nobility of Quraish, intend on putting out the light of Islam. Despite being outnumbered three to one and appearing weak and unseasoned, the Muslims defended their faith with a burning desire to protect the Prophet and meet their Lord through martyrdom. Allah gave them a decisive victory on this day of Ramadan, that would never be forgotten.

In 6 A.H., Zaid ibn Haritha was sent to Wadi al-Qura at the head of a detachment to confront Fatimah bint Rabiah, the queen of that area. Fatimah had previously attacked a caravan led by Zaid and had succeeded in plundering its wealth. She was known to be the most protected woman in Arabia, as she hung fifty swords of her close relatives in her home. Fatimah was equally renowned for showing open hostility to Islam. She was killed in a battle against these Muslims in the month of Ramadan.

By Ramadan of 8 A.H., the treaty of Hudaibiyya had been broken and the Muslim armies had engaged the Byzantines in the North. Muhammad, sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam, felt the need to strike a fatal blow to disbelief in the Arabian Peninsula and conquer the city of Mecca. Allah has declared His Sanctuary a place of peace, security and religious sanctity. Now the time had come to purify the Ka`bah of nakedness and abomination. The Prophet, sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam set out with an army having more armed men than al-Madinah had ever seen before. People were swelling the army's ranks as it moved toward Makkah. The determination of the believers, guided by the Will of Allah, became so awesome that the city of Makkah was conquered without a battle, on 20 Ramadan. This was one of the most important dates in Islamic history for after it, Islam was firmly entrenched in the Arabian Peninsula. During the same month and year, after smashing the idols of Makkah, detachments were sent to the other major centers of polytheism and al-Lat, Manat and Suwa, some of the greatest idols of Arabia, were destroyed.

Such was the month of Ramadan in the time of the Prophet, sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam. It was a time of purification, enjoining the good, forbidding the evil, and striving hard with one's life and wealth. After the death of the Prophet, sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam, Muslims carried on this tradition and Allah used the true believers to affect the course of history. Ramadan continued to be a time of great trials and crucial events.

Ninety-two years after the Hijrah, Islam had spread across North Africa, Iran, Afghanistan, Yemen and Syria. Spain was under the tyrannical rule of King Roderic of the Visigoths. Roderic had forced his six millions serfs and persecuted Jews to seek the aid of the Muslims of North Africa in order to be delivered. Musa ibn Husair, the Umayyad governor of North Africa, responded by sending his courageous general Tariq ibn Ziyad at the head of 12,000 Berber and Arab troops. In Ramadan of that year, they were confronted with a combined Visigoth army of 90,000 Christians led by Roderic himself, who was seated on a throne of ivory, silver, and precious gems and drawn by white mules. After burning his boats, Tariq preached to the Muslims warning them that victory and Paradise lay ahead of them and defeat and the sea lay to the rear. They burst forth with great enthusiasm and Allah manifested a clear victory over the forces of disbelief. Not only was Roderic killed and his forces completely annihilated, but also Tariq and Musa succeeded in liberating the whole of Spain, Sicily and parts of France. This was the beginning of the Golden Age of Al-Andalus where Muslims ruled for over 700 years.

In the year 582 A.H., Salahuddin Al-Ayyubi, after battling with the Crusaders for years, finally drove them out of Syria and the whole of their occupied lands in the month of Ramadan. The Muslim world was then destined to meet one of its most frightening challenges.

In the seventh century A.H. the Mongols were sweeping across Asia destroying everything that lay in their path. Genghis Khan called himself "the scourge of God sent to punish humanity for their sins". In 617 A.H., Samarkand, Ray and Hamdan were put to the sword causing more than 700,000 people to be killed or made captive. In 656 A.H., Hulagu, the grandson of Genghis Khan, continued this destruction. Even Baghdad, the leading city of the Muslim world, was sacked. Some estimates say that as many as 1,800,000 Muslims were killed in this awesome carnage. The Christians were asked to eat pork and drink wine openly while the surviving Muslims were forced to participate in drinking bouts. Wine was sprinkled in the masjids and no Azan (call to prayer) was allowed. In the wake of such a horrible disaster and with the threat of the whole Muslim world and then Europe being subjected to the same fate, Allah raised up from the Mamluks of Egypt, Saifuddin Qutz, who united the Muslim army and met the Mongols at Ain Jalut on 25th of Ramadan, 458 A.H. Although they were under great pressure, the Muslims with the help of Allah, cunning strategy and unflinching bravery crushed the Mongol army and reversed this tidal wave of horror. The whole of the civilized world sighed in relief and stood in awe at the remarkable achievement of these noble sons of Islam.

This was the spirit of Ramadan that enabled our righteous forefathers to face seemingly impossible challenges. It was a time of intense activity, spending the day in the saddle and the night in prayer while calling upon Allah for His mercy and forgiveness.

Today, the Muslim world is faced with drought, military aggression, widespread corruption and tempting materialism. Surely we are in need or believers who can walk in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet, sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam, the illustrious Sahabah, Tariq ibn Ziyad, Qutuz, Salahuddin and the countless heroes of Islam. Surely we are in need of believers who are unafraid of the threats of the disbelievers, yet kind and humble to the believing people; Muslims whose fast is complete and not just a source of hunger and thirst.

May Allah raise up a generation of Muslims who can carry Islam to all corners of the globe in a manner that befits our age, and may He give us the strength and the success to lay the proper foundations for them. May Allah make us of those who carry out our Islam during Ramadan and after it, and may He not make us of those who say what they do not do. Surely Allah and His Angels invoke blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad. O you who believe, send blessings and peace to him forever.

The Road to Dubai
by Um Yaqoob

This moving piece was written by Um Yaqoob, a talented lady whom I have had the pleasure and privilege of getting to know via a small but close-knit Muslimah egroup. She writes beautifully and has on more than one occasion, inspired us with her stories and her unwavering faith. I hope you like this and I ask that you make du`aa for her and her family...

On the road to Dubai, my husband stopped at a small masjid to make the `Asr prayer. As I sat in the car, I saw a figure approaching from the direction of a small group of houses. It took some time before I realized it was a man, crawling toward the masjid. He wore rubber sandals on his hands. His lower body dragged on the hard, rocky ground. The 110-degree temperatures had beaten sweat out of his entire body. By the time he reached the masjid courtyard I could see he was soaked and his face was flushed. Many men passed him on their way to the prayer, perhaps accustomed to seeing him. One man came out of a shop and watched him for awhile. He went back into the shop and came out with a cold drink. He opened it for the crawling man and they sat together for a minute. I heard them talking, the one man offering to help the man and the other insisting he could make it up the stairs to the masjid. He was concerned about making it on time, so he excused himself and continued his slow, labored journey to the prayer. I did not watch him as he mounted the stairs. I could not imagine how to help him. I was crying by then, remembering the hadith of the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam: “The hypocrites find Fajr and `Isha prayers in congregation very oppressive. If they could know the virtues of these two prayers, they would certainly join them, even if they had to go crawling.” (Bukhari, Muslim) This man, who literally did crawl even in the heat of the day, did not find the congregational prayer oppressive at all. May Allah reward all who struggle to please Him and may He always remind us of our own weaknesses through such people, ameen.

More Gems from Ibn Hazm

"There is no worse blame than that of a man who praises a quality in you that you do not have, thereby drawing attention to its absence."

"There is no better praise than that of a man who reproaches you for a fault that you do not have, thereby drawing attention to your merit, and he gives you your revenge on him by exposing himself to rebuttal and the reproach of having slandered you."

"Anyone who criticises you cares about your friendship. Anyone who makes light of your faults cares nothing about you."

"When you give advice, do not give it only on condition that it will be taken. Do not intercede only on condition that your intercession is accepted; do not make a gift only on condition that you will be recompensed. Do it only to practise virtue, and to do what you should do when giving advice, interceding or being generous."

"I have noticed that people are more generous with their opinions than with their pennies. In my long study of this matter, this has never been disproved in spite of countless observations. Since I cannot understand the cause of this, I suppose it must be innate in human nature."

"There is no worse calamity for knowledge and for scholars than when outsiders intrude. They are ignorant and think that they are knowledgeable; they ruin everything and believe that they are helping."

"Patience in the face of others' insolence is of 3 kinds: patience with someone who has power over you when you have none over him; patience with someone you have power over when he has none over you; finally patience with someone when neither of you has power over the other. The first kind is humiliating and degrading; it is not a virtue. The advice for someone who is afraid of such an intolerable situation would be to abandon everything and run away. The second kind is a virtue, it is charitable, it is the true meekness which characterises virtuous souls. The third sort consists of two kinds. The insolence may arise form a misunderstanding or from fear, and the one at fault may realise the ugliness of his act and regret it. To be patient with him would be a virtue and an obligation; this is true magnanimity. But with a person who overestimates his own value and is proud and arrogant and feels no regret for his action, to tolerate this is humiliating, it encourages the wrongdoer in his wrongdoing, because he will act more violently and it would be stupid to respond in the same way. The wisest course of action is to let him know that you are refraining from doing so because he is beneath contempt and unworthy of your attention. No more is necessary. As for the insolent behaviour of the lower classes, the only remedy is to punish it."

"If you are proud of your intelligence, remember all the bad thoughts that come into your mind, the deceitful hopes which assail you, then you will realise how feeble your intelligence is."

THE SEVEN

Yesterday, Sister Azranan left a comment on my post about riyaa, mentioning the blessed act of giving anonymously. BarakAllahu feeki, Sister...

I remembered the hadeeth she alluded to and decided to post it as it is one of my favourites. It is truly so very beautiful and profound, mashaa Allah.

Narrated Abu Huraira radhiallahu `anhu:

The Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said, "Seven people will be shaded by Allah under His shade on the day when there will be no shade except His. They are:

(1) a just ruler;

(2) a young man who has been brought up in the worship of Allah (i.e. worship Allah (Alone) sincerely from his childhood);

(3) a man whose heart is attached to the mosque (who offers the five compulsory congregational prayers in the mosque);

(4) two persons who love each other only for Allah's sake and they meet and part in Allah's cause only;

(5) a man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for an illegal sexual intercourse with her and says: I am afraid of Allah;

(6) a person who practices charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given (i.e. nobody knows how much he has given in charity);

(7) a person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes get flooded with tears."

RIYAA'

Abu Sa`eed radhiallahu `anhu reported: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam came to us while we were discussing about Dajjal and said, "Shall I not inform you of that which I fear for you even more than the dangers of Dajjal? It is the hidden shirk: a person stands to pray and he beautifies his prayer because he sees the people looking at him." [Sahih Sunan Ibn Majah]

Abu Hurayrah radhiallahu `anhu narrated that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said:

“Indeed, Allah the Most Exalted will descend to His slaves on the Day of Judgment, and judge between them. All the nations will be humble to their knees (kneeling). The first people to be called to account on the Day of Judgment will be (a scholar) and reciter of the Qur’an, a martyr who was killed in the cause of Allah and a rich person (who used to constantly give his wealth). Allah will ask (the scholar) and reciter of the Qur’an, "Have I not taught you what was revealed to my Messenger?" And he will answer, "Yes." So Allah will ask him, "What did you do with that which I taught you?" He will respond, "I used to recite it day in and day out (and I used to seek knowledge and teach it to the people)." Then Allah will answer him, "No you have lied!" And the angels will say, "No you have lied!" Allah will then say, "You only wished for people to say about you: He is a reciter of the Qur’an, and so it was said!"

And the person with great wealth will be brought forth and Allah will say, "Did I not bless you so that you did not need to depend on others?" He will respon, "Yes!" Allah will ask, "Then what did you do with what I had given you?" He will say, "I fulfilled my family obligations and spent my money in charity." Then Allah will say, "No you have lied!" And the angels will say, "No you have lied!" Allah will then say, "You only spent so that people would call you generous, and so it was said."

And the person who died in the way of Allah will be asked, "How did you die?" He will answer, "O my Lord! I was asked to make jihad in your way so I fought until I was killed." Allah will say, "No you have lied!" And the angels will say, "No you have lied!" Allah will then say, "You only fought so that it would be said of you: He has great valour, and so it was said."

Then the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam tapped my knee and sid, 'O Abu Hurayrah! These are the first three peple amongst the creation of Allah that the fire of Hell will consume on the Day of judgement."

~ authenticated in Saheeh at-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb. The parts in brackets are from other authentic narrations. This narration is also found in Saheeh Sunan at-Tirmidhi.

.: The Noble Qur`aan :.
11.05.03 (1:21 am)

The Noble Qur`aan

Allah Most High has said: "Had We sent this Qur`aan down upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled, rent asunder from the fear of Allah…" [Surah al-Hashr, 59:21]

I read a very interesting hadeeth from Saheeh al-Bukhari in which the noble Sahabi Zaid bin Thabit was asked the question, "How much time was there between the pre-dawn meal and the Dawn Prayer?" He answered, "Enough time to recite fifty ayat." Since it was the practice of the Arabs to time in terms of everyday actions, this hadeeth shows that the Sahabah were pre-occupied with the Qur`aan, especially in Ramadhaan.

I did a little more research on this matter and was greatly inspired – and shamed – when I read about how the Salaf venerated the Qur`aan. They used to recite the whole of the Qur`aan many times and when Ramadhaan came, they would recite even more. Jibreel `alayhis salaam used to meet the Prophet every night during Ramadhaan and study the Qur`aan with him but during his final year on the earth, he reviewed the Qur`aan with him twice.

When Abdullaah Ibn Idrees was dying, his daughter wept and he told her: “My daughter, do not cry, for I have recited the whole of the Qur’aan (in preparation) for this very hour four thousand times.” Imagine that… FOUR THOUSAND TIMES! SubhanAllah…

Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali in "Lata'if al-Ma'arif" gives many more examples from a remarkable Qur`aanic generation. He said,

"... Some of the Salaf would complete reciting the whole Qur`aan during the night prayer of Ramadan every 3 days, others every 7 days, e.g. Qataadah; others in 10 days, e.g. Abu Rajaa' al-Atardi. The Salaf would recite Qur`aan in Ramadan in Prayer as well as outside it. Al-Aswad would finish the Qur`aan every 2 nights in Ramadan; Ibrahim an-Nakh'i would do likewise in the last 10 nights specifically, and every 3 nights during the rest of the month. Qataadah would regularly finish the Qur`aan in 7 days, but in 3 days during Ramadan, when he would study the Qur`aan especially, and every night during its last 10 days. Al-Zuhri would say when Ramadan began, 'It is recitation of the Qur`aan and feeding of people.' When Ramadan began, Imam Malik would cease narrating Hadith and sitting with the people of knowledge, and stick to reciting the Qur`aan from its pages, while Sufyan al-Thawri would leave other acts of worship and stick to reciting the Qur`aan. 'Aishah would recite from the pages of the Qur`aan at the beginning of the day in Ramadan (i.e. after Dawn), until when the sun had risen, she would sleep. Zayd al-Yaami would bring copies of the Qur`aan when Ramadan began and gather his companions around him..." *

The Virtues of Reading the Qur`aan
It was only when I began to study Islam in earnest that I began to appreciate the value of the Qur`aan. I found it difficult to master and to this day, I still cannot read it in confident and assured tones. It used to dishearten me a great deal, but no more. It was sheer folly that brought my practising the Qur`aan to a standstill for I was in actual fact not just missing out but passing up on the abundant rewards that Allah has promised.

[1] One receives hasanah for reading the Qur`aan
It was reported by `Abdullaah bin Mas`ood radhiallahu `anhu that Rasulullaah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam stated that "Whoever reads a harf [letter] from the Book of Allah will receive a hasanah (good deed) from it (i.e. his recitation), and the hasanah is multiplied by ten. I do not say that Alif-Laam-Meem is (considered as) a harf, rather Alif is a harf, Laam is a harf, and Meem is a harf." [At-Tirmidhi, Ad-Darimi] Rewards? You do the math!

Further, an authentic hadeeth states: "He who is skillful in reciting the Qur`aan is with the unveiled, honorable, and pious (i.e. Hur al `Ain). And he who stutters when reading the Qur`aan, (and its recitation) is difficult upon him, will receive two rewards." [Al-Bukhari]

[2] The Qur`aan will act as an intercessor for one in the hereafter.
We all want Paradise and a sure way to get there is to give the Qur`aan its due importance. One who reads and lives by it will be successful.

"Read the Qur`aan. For verily it will come forth on the Day of Resurrection as an intercessor for its readers." [Muslim]

"The Qur`aan is an intercessor (which by Allah's permission) intercedes, and an opponent (which is) truthful. He who appoints it as his leader, (then it) will lead him to Paradise. And he who puts it behind him, (then it) will lead him to the Fire." [Ibn Hibban, Al-Bayhaqi, At-Tabarani, Sahih]

"Fasting and the Qur`aan will intercede for the slave on the Day of Resurrection. Fasting will say: 'O My Rabb! I prevented him from food and desires, so accept my intercession for him.' And the Qur`aan will say: 'I prevented him from sleep during the night, so accept my intercession for him.' He (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) said: 'And they will (be allowed to) intercede.'" [Ahmad, at-Tabarani, Al-Hakim, Sahih]

"Indeed those who recite the Book of Allaah and offer the Prayer perfectly and spend in charity out of what We have provided for them - secretly and openly - hope for a sure trade-gain that will never perish. That He may pay them their wages in full and give them even more out of His Grace. Indeed, He is Oft-Forgiving, ready to appreciate good deeds." [Soorah Fatir 35:29-30]

[3] Reading the Qur`aan increases our faith
The Qur`aan contains a cure for the diseased and weak heart as Allah says, what translated means, "And We sent down from the Qur`aan that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism)." [Surah al-Isra 17:82] If we read the Qur`aan with understanding, we will see how it contains a wealth of information – teachings of tawheed, Allah's laws, inspiring illustrations of the prophets `alayhimus salaam, models of the best behaviour and examples of the fallen nations.

We are told that the pious before us would read the Qur`an and be so moved that they would weep heavily.

Ibn al Qayyim said in Zaad al Ma'aad: "As for the weeping of the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, it was in the same degree as his laughter. He wouldn't sob loudly and raise his voice, just like his laughter wasn't loud. However his eyes would fill up with tears, until they flowed out, and you would hear the sound like that of a whistling kettle coming from his chest. He would weep out of mercy for the dead, out of fear and compassion for his ummah, out of deep fear of Allah, upon listening to the Qur`aan. And it was a weeping of longing, love and exaltation, accompanied by fear and khashyah."

On the authority of 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ood radhiallahu `anhu who said: "The Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam told me: "Recite to me!" So I recited Surah an-Nisa' until I reached: 'How will it be then, when We bring from each nation a witness, and bring you (O Prophet Muhammad) as a witness against these people?' [Surah an-Nisaa 4:41] Then I looked towards him and behold! I saw that his eyes were overflowing with tears." [al Bukhari, Muslim and others]

The weeping of `Umar radhiallahu `anhu could be heard from the last rows, as it has been reported to us by `Abdullah ibn Shaddaad, who said, "I heard the sobbing of `Umar from the last rows while he was reciting the verse from the Qur`aan: 'I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allah.'" [Surah Yusuf 12:86] [al Bukhari, al Bayhaqi (2/251), saheeh]

Understand Its Meanings
In order to truly benefit from the Qur`aan, we should concentrate on it as if we are the ones being directly addressed. Allah the Most High says: "Indeed in this there is a remembrance for those who have a living heart, listen attentively and are awake to taking heed." [Surah Qaaf 50:37]

Ibn Qutaibah said: "Listen to the book of Allah whilst your heart and mind is attentive, not neglectful nor distant."

We should also strive to UNDERSTAND the Qur`aan. Allah the Most High says: "This is a Book which We have sent down to you, full of blessings, that you may ponder over its Verses, and that men of understanding may remember." [Surah Saad 38:29]

"Read the Qur`aan, put it into practice, do not abandon it, do not put grudges (upon others) through it, and do not eat and gain wealth through it." [Ahmad, At-Tabarani, Sahih]

How can we absorb and implements the teachings of this noble Book if we do not comprehend it? We should not rush through it perfunctorily as if it were an ordinary book. Rather, we should give it due time for serious contemplation, seeking Allah's Pleasure. "Read the Qur`aan and through it seek the Face of Allah, Exalted be He, before there comes a nation that implements it like an arrow. They read it fast and they do not recite it slowly (to implement)." [Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Hasan]

Indeed, the Sahabah radhiallahu `anhum would not go beyond ten ayat until they had learnt them and understood the knowledge therein and how to act upon it.

We can better acquaint ourselves with the meanings of the Qur`aan by learning the Arabic language, attending classes and study circles on the Qur`aan and its sciences and reading the books of tafseer, some of which are now available in the English language.

Do not abandon the Qur`aan
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam described various people according to their relationship with the Qur`aan: "The likeness of the believer who reads the Qur`aan is like that of citron; its taste is delicious and its scent is pleasant. And the likeness of the believer who does not read the Qur`aan is like that of a date; its taste is delicious, yet it has no scent. And the likeness of a hypocrite who reads the Qur`aan is like that of a basil; its scent is pleasant, yet its taste is bitter. And the likeness of a hypocrite that does not read the Qur`aan is like that of a colocynth; its taste is bitter and it has no scent." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

We need to make a resolute effort to read the Qur`aan regularly. The Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said: "Verily he who has nothing of the Qur`aan in his heart, is like a house (which has been) destroyed." [At-Tirmidhi] He also warned, "Maintain learning the Qur`aan, by heart for verily it is greater in escaping from the chests of men than camels from their reins." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Let us strive to read, understand and reflect upon the Qur`aan during these blessed days and nights, inshaa Allah. May Allah guide us and may He give us success in this world and the hereafter, ameen.

Note:
* Al-Haafidh Ibn Rajab (rahimahullaah) said: "The forbiddance of reciting the Qur'aan in less than three days (as stated in a hadeeth) has only been mentioned in regards to its being done on a normal basis. As for the specific times that are virtuous, such as the month of Ramadaan and especially the nights in which the night of Al-Qadr is sought. Or those places that are virtuous, such as Makkah for the one who enters it without residing there, then it is recommended to recite the Qur'aan a lot in these times and places, seeking the merits connected with their time and place. This is the opinion of Ahmad, Abu Ishaaq and other scholars. And the actions of others indicate that as has been stated previously." [Lataa'if-ul-Ma'aarif]

.: Etiquettes of Eating :.

Etiquettes of Eating

I was doing some reading earlier and my mind strayed towards the topic of - well, what else since we are in Ramadhaan – food. This is a funny thing about the fasting month – we are to abstain from eating and drinking, among other things, but it seems that the more we refrain, the more it occupies our thoughts! We are consumed with planning our menus – for iftar, for suhoor and, even though it is a while away, `Eid!

There is nothing wrong with wanting to prepare a good meal for the family of course. We should ensure that we receive proper nutrition to keep up our strength for even more `ibadah during this blessed month. There is no sense in allowing oneself to become dehydrated or ill.

We just need to guard ourselves against going overboard. We should be careful that we do not become slaves to the kitchen, preparing overly elaborate meals which take up time that could otherwise be used in study and worship. We also must guard against overeating – it would be a shame if we were to undo the benefits of fasting by not just eating too much but by eating unhealthy foods. There is a saying of the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam that we need to bear in mind, "We are a people who do not eat until we are hungry. And if we eat, we do not eat to our fill."

Mealtimes can be a wonderful opportunity for bonding with the family. It is also an ideal time for us to teach the little ones the proper etiquettes of eating and drinking from the Qur`an and Sunnah.

Here are a few tips I have learnt in the past few days. I hope that you will find them useful.

[1] Eat only that which is halal and good
Allah says, "O you who believe. Eat of the lawful pure things that We have provided for you." [Surah al-Baqarah 2:172]

He also says, "So eat of the lawful and good food which Allah has provided for you, and thank the bounty of your Lord if it is Him you serve." [Surah an-Nahl 16:114]

And, "O you messengers! Eat of the good things, and do right. Lo! I am Aware of what you do." [Surah al-Mu'minoon 23:51]

We should ensure that our earnings are halal, for subsisting on haram sources cuts us off from the help of Allah. On authority of Abu Huraira radhiallahu `anhu, who reported that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said: Allah the Almighty is good and accepts only that which is good. Allah has commanded the Faithful to do that which he commanded the Messengers, and the Almighty has said: "O ye Messengers! Eat of the good things, and do right." And Allah the Almighty has said: "O ye who believe! Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you." Then he mentioned the case of a man who, having journeyed far, is disheveled and dusty and who spreads out his hands to the sky saying: "O Lord! O Lord!" while his food is unlawful, his drink unlawful, his clothing unlawful, and he is nourished unlawfully, so how can he be answered?" [Muslim]

[2] Say Bismillah before eating
Indeed, the pronouncement of Allah's Name brings barakah to a meal. `Aishah radhiallahu `anha reported that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said, "When any of you wants to eat, he should mention the name of Allah in the beginning (i.e., say Bismillah). If he forgets to do it in the beginning, he should say, 'Bismillah awwalahu wa akhirahu' (I begin with the Name of Allah at the beginning and at the end)." [At-Tirmidhi & Abu Dawud]

Similarly, the omission of mentioning His Name robs the meal of blessings. Jaabir radhiallahu `anhu reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam saying, "If a person mentions the Name of Allah upon entering the house or eating, Satan says, addressing his followers, 'You will find no where to spend the night and no dinner.' But if he enters without entering the Name of Allah, Satan says (to his followers), 'You have found (a place) to spend the night in' and if he does not mention the name of Allah at the time of eating, Satan says, 'You have found (a place) to spend the night in as well as food.'" [Muslim]

Here is another interesting narration – Umaiyyah bin Makshi radhiallahu `anhu said that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam was sitting while a man was eating food. That man did not mention the Name of Allah before commencing to eat till only a morsel of food was left. When he raised it to his mouth, he said, "Bismillah awwalahu wa akhirahu." The Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam smiled at this and said, ""Shaytan had been eating with him but when he mentioned the Name of Allah, Shaytan vomited all that was in his stomach." [Abu DAwud & An-Nasa`i]

The fasting person can recite the du`aa that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said when he broke his fast: "The thirst has gone and the veins have recovered and the blessing is established if Allah wills (dhahaba dhamaa'a wabtallat al-urooq wa thabatal ajr inshaa'allaah)." [Ahmad, Al-Baihaaqee]

[3] Praise Allah after the meal
Abu Umamah radhiallahu `anhu reported: Whenever the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam finished a meal, he would say, "Al-hamdu lillahi kathiran taiyiban mubarakah fihi, ghaira makfiyyin wa la mu wadda`in, wa la mustaghnan `anhu Rabbuna. (All praise is due to Allah, praise which is abundant pure and full of blessings which is indispensable and to which one cannot be indifferent.)" [al-Bukhari]

Mu`adh bin Anas radhialahu `anhu reported that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said, "He who has taken food and says at the end, 'Al-hamdu lillahi-lladhi at`amani hadha, wa razaqanihi min ghairi haulin minni wa la quwwatin (All praise is due to Allah Who has given me food to eat and provided it without any endeavour on my part or any power)', all his past sins will be forgiven." [at-Tirmidhi]

Look at the Mercy of Allah – we do not just earn blessings by thanking Him after eating, we also earn forgiveness for our minor sins!

[4] Eat with our right hands
Salamah bin Al-Akwa` radhiallahu `ahu reported on the authority of his father: A man ate with his left hand in the presence of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, whereupon he said, "Eat with your right hand." The man said, "I cannot do that." Thereupon, he, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said, "May you not be able to do that." It was vanity that prevented him from doing it and he could not raise it (the right hand) up to his mouth afterwards. [Muslim]

[5] Eat what is in front of us
`Umar ibn Abi Salamah radhiallahu `anhu reported: I was a boy under the care of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam and as my hand used to wander around in the dish, he said to me once, "Mention Allah's name (i.e., say 'Bismillah'), eat with your right hand and eat from what is in front of you." [al-Bukhari & Muslim]

[6] Do not find fault with the food
It is indeed a appalling that we criticize food or worse, kick up a fuss when a dish is not to our liking. This is a grievous wrong for in so doing, we are not only hurting the feelings of the one who prepared the food, but also not showing due gratitude to Allah who has provided us with sustenance!

Look at our role model – Abu Hurairah radhiallahu `anhu reported that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam never found fault with food. If he had inclination to eating it, he would eat; and if he disliked it, he would leave it. [al-Bukhari & Muslim]

Furthermore, the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam practiced simplicity in every aspect of his life, including his diet. He accepted what was available without complaint. Jabir radhiallahu `anhu reported that the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam asked for sauce and was told that there was nothing except vinegar. He asked for it and began to eat from it saying, "How excellent is vinegar when eaten as a sauce! How excellent is vinegar when eaten as Udm!" [Muslim]

[7] Eat with three fingers and lick them after the meal
Ka`b bin Malik radhiallahu `anhu reported: I saw the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam eating with 3 fingers (i.e., the thumb, the index and middle fingers) and licking them after having finished the food." [Muslim] It is bad manners to stuff one's mouth greedily. We can thus see the wisdom behind eating with only three fingers.

In addition, we should not waste our food – Jabir radhiallah `anhu said that the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa salllam commanded the licking of fingers and the gleaning of the dish, saying, "You do not know in which portion the blessing lies." [Muslim]

[8] Eat from the side of the dish
Ibn `Abbas radhiallahu `anhuma reported that the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said, "Blessing descends upon food in its middle so eat from the sides of the vessel and do not eat from the middle." [at-Tirmidhi & Abu Dawud]

[9] Mind our posture
We should not stand while eating for Anas radhiallahu `anhu said that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam forbade a person to drink while standing. When asked about eating, he said, "That is even worse." [Muslim]

We should also not eat in a reclining position – Abu Juhaifah Wahb bin `Abdullah radhiallahu `anhu said that the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam stated, "I do not eat reclining (against a pillow)." [al-Bukhari]

Ibn Hajr says that one should sit with the right knee drawn up and the left one bent down. Indeed the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam would often sit as though he were about to move on to attend to more important affairs.

[10] Pick up food that has fallen
Jabir radhiallahu `anhu reported that the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said, "When a morsel of any of you falls, he should pick it up and remove any of the dirt on it and then eat it, and should not leave it for Satan nor should he wipe his hands with his towel till he has licked his fingers for he does not know in what portion of the food the blessing lies." [Muslim]

We must always be on our guard against shaytan, even at meal times. Not only should we recite the Name of Allah at the commencement of meals, we should not leave even a morsel for the shaytan and his allies to share.

[11] Drink slowly in three gulps and do not breathe into the vessel
Most of us probably feel thirst most acutely while fasting and so when the time comes for iftar, we head first for the drinks. Ibn `Abbas radhiallahu `anhuma said that the Messenger of Allah advised, "Do not drink in one gulp like a camel but in two or three (gulps). Mention the Name of Allah when you start drinking and praise Him after you have finished." [at-Tirmidhi]

In another hadeeth, a man said that he was not quenched after one draught and the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam told him to put the cup away from his mouth in between three gulps and to take a breath.

Abu Qatadah radhiallahu `anhu reported that the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam forbade breathing into the vessel while drinking. [al-Bukhari & Muslim]

[12] Eat together
There is a great deal of merit in sharing food – it increases mutual love for the sake of Allah and brings about the blessings of Allah. Jabir bin Abdullah radhiallahu `anhu said that the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam stated, "The food of one person suffices for two, the food of two persons suffices for four persons, and the food of four persons suffices for eight persons." [Muslim]

Wahshi bin Harb radhiallahu `anhu reported: Some of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said, "We eat but are not satisfied." He said, "Perhaps you eat separately." The Companions replied in the affirmative. He then said, "Eat together and mention the name of Allah over your food. It will be blessed for you." [Abu Dawud]

[13] Be considerate to others
We should not be concerned with filling our own plate. Rather, we should show due regard to others sharing the meal. Jabalah bin Suhaim reported: We were with `Abdullah bin az-Zubair radhiallahu `anhuma in a time of famine, then we were provided with dates. (Once) when we were eating, `Abdullah bin `Umar radhiallahu `anhuma passed by us and said, "Do not eat two dates together for the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam prohibited it unless one seeks permission from his brother (partner)." [al-Bukhari & Muslim]

[14] Do not eat to your fill
The Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said, "A human being has not filled any vessel which is worse than a belly. Enough for the son of Adam are some mouthfuls that can keep his back straight, but if there is no escape, he should fill it a third with food, a third with drink and a third empty." [at-Tirmidhi]

[15] Hasten to break the fast
Sahl Ibn Sa'ad said that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said: "My nation would continue to be on my Sunnah as long as they do not wait for the stars to come out before breaking the fast." [Ibn Hibbaan]

Hastening the breaking of the fast is a way to he different from those who are astray and those who have earned Allah's wrath. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said: "The Deen will be uppermost/manifest as long as the people hasten to break their fast because the Jews and the Christians delay (it)." [Abu Dawood & Ibn Hibbaan]

[16] Partake in suhoor
Some people avoid taking suhoor perhaps because they find it a chore to wake up early and to prepare the food. It is a shame because it is a blessed meal.

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said: "Indeed Allah placed blessing in the Suhoor and in the weighing [of grain]." [Shirazi and al-Khateeb/al-Jami`us-Sag heer; Hasan]

Anas reported that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said: "Eat Suhoor, for there are blessings in it." [al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Salman also reported that the Prophet said: "Blessing is in three: the Jama`a, the Thareed and the Suhoor." [Tabarani and Abu Nu`aim; Hasan]

A companion said: "I entered upon the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam and he was taking the Suhoor and he said: "It is a blessing which Allah has given to you, so do not leave it." [Ahmad and an-Nasa'i; Sahih].

Abud-Dardaa' reported that the Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said: "Come to the blessed morning meal (meaning the Suhoor)." [Ahmad, an-Nasa`i and Abu Dawood].

Allah covers those who have suhoor with His Mercy. Furthermore the angels pray for their forgiveness. Abu Said al-Khudri said: The Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said: "The Suhoor is a meal of blessings, so do not leave it, even if one of you just takes a gulp of water, since Allah sends mercy and His angels seek forgiveness for those who take Suhoor." [Ahmad and Ibn Abi Shaibah]

[17] Delay the Suhoor
The Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said: "Hasten the breaking of the fast and delay the Suhoor." [Sahih al-Jami`]

Zaid ibn Thabit reported: "We ate Suhoor with the Messenger of Allah and then we got up for the prayer. He was asked: 'What was the amount of time between the two?' He responded: '[The time it would take to recite] fifty ayat."' [al-Bukhari and Muslim]

'Amr ibn Maimun adds: "The companions of Muhammad sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, would be the first to break the fast and the last to eat their Suhoor." [al-Baihaqi, Abdur-Razzaq and al-Haithami; Sahih]

The Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said: "We, the Prophets, have been ordered to hasten breaking the fast, delay the Suhoor, and to put our right hand on the left one in prayer." [Sahih al-Jami`]

May Allah accept our `ibadah and du`aa … ameen.

.: Gearing Up for Ramadhaan :.
10.22.03 (8:18 pm)

Gearing Up for Ramadhaan

We will soon enter the month of Ramadhan inshaa Allah. In order to reap the full benefits of this month, we need to appreciate that it is a blessing from Allah. He the Most High said: "The month of Ramadhaan in which the Qur’aan was revealed, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance of the Criterion between right and wrong. So whosoever of you sights the crescent for the month of Ramadhaan, he must fast that month." [Surah al-Baqarah 2:185]

Indeed the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam used to give glad tidings about the coming of Ramadhaan, reminding the companions of its virtues and urging them to perform righteous acts. Abu Hurairah radhiallahu `anhu reported that he sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam said: "Ramadaan has come to you - a blessed month. Allah has made obligatory upon you its fasting. In it, the gates of heaven are open, the gates of the Hellfire are closed and the evil devils are chained. To Allah belongs a night in it, which is better than a thousand months. Whosoever is prevented from its good, then he has been deprived." [Ahmad & An-Nasaa'ee]

It is a month of challenges – it is not easy to restrain one's appetite, desires and anger with the best of intentions and purely for the sake of Allah, but let us not complain about having to go hungry, being tired and weakened or about the many preparations for `Eid, for if this is how we view Ramadhaan, then we are in fact one of the losers.

Let us instead adopt the attitude of the salaf (pious predecessors) who took refuge in and found great pleasure in the worship Allah. Yahya ibn Mu`adh said, "How can I not love a life in which I have my provision, earn my livelihood and love to perform acts of obedience on account of which I earn Paradise?" [Tazkiyatun-Nufus]

Let us bear in mind that this month is a gift from Allah. Let us remember that fasting is in fact a magnificent opportunity Allah has given us to increase our scale of good deeds. "Every action of the son of Adam is given manifold reward, each good deed receiving ten times its like, up to seven hundred times. Allah the Most High said, 'Except for fasting, for it is for Me and I will give recompense for it, he leaves off his desires and his food for Me.' For the fasting person there are two times of joy; a time when he breaks his fast and a time of joy when he meets his Lord, and the smell coming from the mouth of the fasting person is better with Allah than the smell of musk." [al-Bukhari]

Abu Umaamah radhiallahu `anhu said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, tell me of an action by which I may enter Paradise'. He said: 'Take to Fasting, there is nothing like it.'" [An-Nasaa'ee, Ibn Hibbaan, Al-Haakim, Saheeh]

We should thus give thanks to Allah for allowing us to see yet another Ramadhaan, for this is a month in which we can strengthen our commitment.

Truly, this month is short… TIME is short! Have we not often said to ourselves, "Oh, it is Ramadhaan again… a whole year has passed… where has the time gone?" We would do well to remember that our time is precious – it is fleeting and once gone, cannot be reclaimed or relived. It is a wealth but a wealth more precious than any gem or gold.

As Muslims, we must ensure that NONE of our time is devoid of the remembrance of and dedication to Allah. Abdullah ibn Mas'ood said, "I have never regretted anything as much as I regret a day on which the sun set, my term was shortened and my deeds did not increase." Umar ibn Abdul-Aziz said, "The night and the day are surely acting upon you, so act you therein."

We do not know if we will live long enough to see the end of this Ramadhaan, much less the next, so let us not procrastinate but hasten towards good and abandon all that is evil. As Salman ibn Dinar said, "Whatever you would like to accompany you in the Hereafter, plant it today and whatever you hate to accompany you in the Hereafter, abandon it today." [Sifatus-Safwah]

This Ramadhaan, let us occupy ourselves with acts that bring us closer to Allah such as reading the Qur`an, making dhikr, performing taraweeh, charity, performing i`tikaaf, seeking forgiveness and increasing du`aa. Let us remember the words of Yahya ibn Mu`adh in his will and testament, "The night is long so do not make it shorter by excessive sleeping. The day is pure so do not stain it by your sins. Be like a passerby in this life, realising that leaving comes after a little rest and that moving along comes faster than the respite."
